1. Ghent, Belgium
Sitting quietly between Brussels and Bruges, Ghent gets skipped by travelers rushing toward its more famous neighbors — which is exactly why we like taking people there. Medieval architecture lines the canals, and the Gravensteen castle is worth setting aside a proper afternoon for, alongside whatever’s cooking in the city’s kitchens.
2. Porto, Portugal
Lisbon usually gets the attention, but Porto holds its own with a character all its own.
